[Imagine Downtown] Lafayette Open Ideas Competition (2012-13)

Interviews with Creative Action Chairman Colin Miller and Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel

[Imagine Downtown] Lafayette was an international urban design competition focused on invigorating Lafayette's urban core and generating a sustainable vision for its downtown district. The project sprouted through a collaboration between Creative Action and Urban Land Institute – Louisiana.

As the Chairman of Creative Action, I worked with our members and the leadership of partnering organizations on fundraising and development, public/media relations, branding, design, event coordination, and marketing for the [Imagine Downtown] project.

Following the competition's announcement in the Fall of 2012, Creative Action received over a hundred submissions from all over the world. A panel of five jurors selected a winning team for each of six downtown sites featured in the competition. The winners included three teams from US cities – Houston, Portland (OR) and Chicago, and three foreign teams from Slovenia, China and Italy. [Imagine Downtown] Lafayette then culminated in three exhibitions of the winning designs, two of them held at the Acadiana Center for the Arts during Festival International de Louisiane and during a presentation of the Downtown Strategic Framework Plan (by Zyscovich Architects and WRT). The third exhibition occurred at Tulane University.

The graphic and exhibition designers, Peter DeHart and Allison Bohl DeHart of Makemade, went on to receive a Silver ADDY® for the design of the [Imagine Downtown] Lafayette poster.
